Ammers beaten at Maltby

Ammers slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Maltby Main, never recovering from the early deficit, in the NCEL Division One on Saturday.

Nine minutes were on the clock when Wade Ripley opened the scoring at Muglet Lane, doubling his tally the other side of Ash Flynn’s strike.

Taylor Ragan replied for The Ammers a minute before the break but that was as much ground as the visitors recovered.

Five changes were made from Saturday’s visit to Selby, Elliot Jones, Amari Smith, Kadeem Morton, Zidane Varela and Ali Tunkara all starting.

The majority of the play in the opening ten minutes was at the bottom of hill, inside Ammers’ half, the visitors unable to find Roy Fogarty up top or send either winger chasing in-behind like on Saturday.

Maltby turned possession into a goal advantage on 9 minutes. Wade Ripley’s free-kick, slightly right of centre, was curled, left-footed, away from Viles’ reach.

Noel Nfonkev led the counters on 15 minutes, quickly followed by Varela on the opposite side. Nfonkev beat two down the right to make it inside the box before winning a corner.

Varela took the inside route, his shot deflecting into Fogarty’s feet who was crowded out of being able to fully control the ball on the edge of the box.

There weren’t any chances for either side for the following five minutes until Warne was tee’d up, 25-yards out for a first-time shot, of which it’s rising trajectory counteracted the slope and forced Viles into tipping over.

Ash Flynn created space between the two sides in the scoreline, taking advantage of the gaps vacated by Ammers’ attack just moments earlier. After Nfonkev had again rounded the full-back to cut-back the ball into Fogarty, the fast delivery isn’t taken under control and headed clear, starting the counter which Flynn finished past the left of Viles.

As much as Ammers pushed for a recovery, Kelly’s then one-on-one wigth the Ammers ‘keeper immediately after, chasing a lobbed pass behind Ammers’ defence, Viles parrying the half-volley away to his right.

Finished by Ripley for his second, the build-up from Flynn and Stead orchestrated it. Flynn’s vision was complimented by the chipped through pass between two Ammers defenders, ashead of Stead who beat Viles to the ball, rounding the ‘keeper and squaring for Ripley to place into the vacated goal.

Taylor Ragan’s second of the season recovered some of the deficit before half-time. Nfonkev again involved out wide-right, cutting the ball back for Ragan to power his strike in from distance just a minute before the break.

The same suspects returned to the scene in the second-half, Nfonkev round Jenkinson, poking the ball away from the full-back into the box but can’t find Fogarty with his low cross.

Flynn is able to control a similar delivery from the opposite corner as Ripley is found with a chipped through-pass before crossing, but the former pokes wide when forced to shoot quickly inside the box.

Varela looked for Smith running beyond the hosts’ defence but the ball bounces into to the ‘keeper’s grasp.

Warne dragged a powerful shot wide of the left-hand post for the hosts with under five minutes remaining till the full-time whistle confirmed the hosts’ victory.
