Post-match reaction – Zac Benjamin: “That’s what I try to do, keep the defenders under pressure”

Zac Benjamin believes the defensive effort by his team in the second-half was the reason for the 3-1 quarter-final victory over Yorkshire Elite in the JPL Plate.

Benjamin, who’s own pressuring of defenders earnt him the final goal of the match on Saturday, explained his objective is “to shake them up”.

“In the first-half, I don’t think many people stayed with their man and I don’t think they stayed touch tight with them so they [Yorkshire Elite] had time to touch and pass it.

“But then in the second-half, it started to improve and they [he and his team-mates] got closer in their defending.

“We started pressing hard and when we got our shape, the defence looked a lot better”.

Benjamin’s goal, Farsley’s third, came from the forward pressing his defender and winning possession before advancing into the box and sliding at the ball to poke it under the ‘keeper, typical of Benjamin’s style of play, as he reiterated himself:

“Yeah, that’s what I try to do most times, keep the defenders under pressure, keep them on their toes all the time to get them wary and shake them up so they don’t have enough time on the ball to do what they need to do.”

Benjamin partnered Kyrell Kavanagh up front again, scoring his second in two games and he believes there is a good understanding between the pair

“I tried to get Kav in-behind me so that when he could spin off, he could either hold it up for me to get past him, or vice-versa. When the second-half came we started to get in shape for that role so it worked quite well”.

Benjamin plays next in the U16s’ semi-final, currently awaiting their opponent and date for the match.
