Modou Bojang and Jared Felix’s second-half goals earned the U19s victory vs Stockport County in their opening pre-season friendly, recovering a 1-0 half-time deficit.
A mis-weighted backpass from Yonas Melake gave Stockport a 22nd minute lead while Bojang hit the side netting from inside the box in the first-half.
Captain Rhys Toft’s saved twice from shots beside the penalty spot while the score was still 1-0 to the hosts.
Shawnee Eddy assisted Bojang on the former’s non-competitive debut alongside fellow U16 graduates George Boulton, Yonas Melake and Amari Smith.
Bojang’s pace and agility had the better of his defenders within the first 4 minutes and he was fouled out left. Roberts free-kick teasingly lands on the penalty spot but a Stockport head meets it.
A first shot at goal came through Felix on 7 minutes, central, 20-yards, deflected slightly and skidding straight into the ‘keeper.
Stockport’s ball over the top of Farlsey’s defence on 10 minutes was chested by the attacker but Eddy covered, shielding the ball into Toft who confidently dove at both players’ feet to collect.
Felix removed two Stockport players with one pass on 12 minutes finding Backhouse who passed into Juma in the box. The forward tried cutting inside onto his right but was intercepted.
Roberts passed down the left to Bojang on 15 minutes who crossed low and hard but it was read by a defender.
The left full-backs diagonal pass a minute later was missed by the ‘keeper, tempting Felix to chase but the stopper recovered.
Stockport’s nine cut inside, past Boulton and then Eddy for a clear shot at goal from the edge of the box but it was straight at Toft.
The lead was given to Stockport through a mis-weighted Melake back pass on 22 minutes.
Toft was always losing the race to the ball which is poked through his legs.
Saidi Juma, Felix and Bojang combined on the edge of the box, Felix intercepting 25-yards out and finding Bojang behind him who played a one-two with Juma who’s back was to goal. Bojang received the return pass to his left and adavnces into the box before shooting wide of the near post.
Felix was gifted a loose ball in the Stockport box on 25 minutes and looked to shoot before being blocked as foot met ball.
Stockport found space on the edge of Farsley’s box again, central but again it was straight at Toft.
Toft almost assisted Felix with a direct ball over the Stockport defence which was collected by the forward. His skill knocked the ball inside but the defender’s boot poked it away.
Harry emery collected a kick from the Stockport keeper, 30-yards out and played a one-two with Bojang before aiming for the top left corner but it curled wide.
Backhouse’s range was in again, finding Bojang inside the box who cut onto his right but into a crowd of Stockport defenders with no room to shoot.
Stockport’s ball down left of the box on 42 minutes saw their forward knock it past Boulton before crossing low which brought Toft out from between his posts with a low save.
Bojang received a throw from the left in first-half added-time, turned away and found the path of Naser but his control was too hard allowing the ‘keeper to come out and collect.
Stockport’s pass down the inside the left of the box almost runs behind buts its cut back, low to the penalty spot, controlled and hit on the half-volley but Toft’s in the right place to parry away.
Melake, attacking inside the box is stood up by the defender so he chooses the outside route onto his left-foot, shooting wide of the near post.
A Farsley free-kick on 65 minutes was turned into a Stockport counter with one pass down the left. Reaching the box, the ball was passed to the right, across the box and hit first-time but Toft again was right there to deny with his legs.
A Stockport 25-yard shot on 68 minutes flew to the top left corner before Toft tipped round ‘keeper’s right-hand post.
Farsley’s equaliser was deservedly finished by Bojang on 75 minutes who’d tested the most so far for the Celts.
Eddy’s deep cross was too high for Bah in the middle of the box but not for Bojang at the back post who placed low beside the ‘keeper’s left.
The winner came in the 86th minute through Felix.
Roberts ‘s pass from the left found Felix on the edge of the box who placed the ball into the far right corner.
The U19s play two friendlies in two days starting on Monday 30th August hosting Bradford City and then visiting Buxton the following day.
